How to Install a Petsafe Cat Flap?
Do you have a cat? Of course you do, otherwise why would you read information about cat flaps? Well, you do have a little furry adorable friend, but do you have a petsafe cat flap? In case you don’t, you should definitely buy and install one. It will allow your cat to come and go whenever she wants, thus giving her a feeling of independence and freedom. If your kitty is content, you’ll see how positive and calm the atmosphere in your house will be! Not to mention the fact that you won’t have to get up constantly to open the door for your cat!
So, buy the pet safe cat flap and let’s begin the installation! How to install a cat flap? The first thing you should do is take your kitty and measure it. No, I’m not kidding here! Seriously, measure the distance between your cat’s paws and her belly. This is the figure to operate with when installing a cat door. Usually you’ll have to install the petsafe cat flap at 10 – 15 cm above the floor level. This way, it will be easy and comfortable for your cat to leap through.
Go to the selected door and mark this distance with a pencil in several places, to make sure that you’ve got a straight line. I think you’ll want to install the device in the middle of the door. Of course, if you have other preferences, suit yourself!
Mark the middle of the door using a tape measure and then draw a line that crosses both the height points and the center.
Using this line as a reference point, attach the template that will show you where to drill. Usually the paper template comes with the cat flap. Place the bottom of this paper on the pencil line. Here you have to be careful – the center point on your door has to be in line with the center point on the template. Stick the template in place with some masking tape.
Don’t forget to read the instruction that comes with the product! It will suggest the width of the drill bit – it should be a little bigger than the blade of the jigsaw. Drill a hole in each corner – the template will indicate the exact places. These holes will help you cut out with the jigsaw the shape of your cat flap.
Before doing that, remember to be careful! With a pencil and a ruler, connect the holes with four straight lines. Now you have to saw from hole to hole along these lines, keeping your door closed.
Remove the wood and voila! You have your hole. Smooth down the edges with some sandpaper until it looks nice and tidy. Now you can test if the flap fits. Position the front of the cat flap over the hole. Take the pencil and mark the places of the screw holes through the holes located in the corners of the flap.
Take a drill bit that is a little narrower than the screws and drill the holes where you draw the pencil marks. Take the screws and insert them in the four corners of the front. Open the door, take the back of the cat flap and fasten it to the screws. Attach the nuts to the screws – hold the nut in one hand the screwdriver in the other. Screw until the nut is as tight as possible.
This should do it! Now your petsafe cat flap is ready to use. Test it and show it to your kitty. Soon she will learn how to use it, enjoying the comfort and independence it brings!
