How to Teach Your Cat to Use a Petsafe Cat Flap?
Do you think that your cat should be able to go out whenever she wants? This is a wise and correct decision! Your kitty will love you even more when she’ll feel that you trust her and respect her freedom and independence. The negative part is that you’re probably already tired of opening the door for her all the time. Of course, you can continue the promising career of being your cat’s doorman, or you can invest in a petsafe cat flap.
For controlling your cat’s movements from time to time, buy a petsafe cat flap with a lock. This way, when you decide that Kitty stays home, all you have to do is lock the flap and voila! Kitty stays home. And, of course, don’t forget that most petsafe cat flaps have a special defensive system against raccoons, opossums, small dogs, other cats and different creatures eager to enjoy the comfort of your house. Don’t let them launch an invasion on you! The pet safe cat flaps can be opened only by your cat with the special collar that comes with the product.
So you bought and installed the ingenious device. Now it’s time to teach Kitty to use it! Most cats won’t understand from the start what’s this new weird thing, so arm yourself with a little patience and the help of a friend. Also, don’t forget that a tasty treat will make the job much easier!
Here’s what you can do. Give the treat to your friend and tell him to go outside and sit by the door. Or you could take the treat and go outside, and your friend can stay inside with the kitty. Either way, the cat has to be able to see the person holding the treat through the cat flap. Make sure that your partner is a person your cat likes and trusts. A stranger is not appropriate for the job.
If your friend is the one waiting outside, tell him to call the cat through the cat flap and show her the treat. The kitty will go forward and try to get to the treat. Most cats will even go through the flap without any help. If your kitty is shy and doesn’t trust the new door yet, you can help her a little. Hold the flap opened and encourage her to go through a couple of times. Each time, let the flap down a bit more.
Don’t forget to give your kitty the tasty nom and lots of appraisals once she passed through the flap effectively. After going in and out several times, your cat will stop being shy and will enjoy all the benefits of her new petsafe cat flap!
