The Electromagnetic Cat Flap – Protect Your Home from Stray Pets
Indeed an ordinary cat flap is a great help to cat owners. Through this device, you can find the comfort and the ease of allowing your cat in and out of the house without being bothered in your work or rest. Through a cat flap, you are also giving your pet the freedom that he or she deserves. However, there is only one downfall among these ordinary pet doors: they also become a passageway for stray animals into your house.
It happened to my brother one year ago. My brother, like me, is a cat lover. He lives in Arkansas now with his family: her wife and their sweet little girl Lorane. They were living a healthy life with their cat, Salamander (Lorane chose this name because she wanted a salamander instead of a cat). Salamander, like any other cat, is a wanderer. She loves to travel outside and play under the sun. My brother installed a cat flap on their kitchen door to allow Salamander to go in and out of the house without bothering anyone to open and close the door for her. One night, while they were deep in their sleep, my brother heard a loud shrill cry from Lorane. It was a scream as if someone was hurting her. He, along with his wife, hurriedly went to their daughter’s room to find that she was not there. Lorane continued screaming. They followed her voice and learned that it was coming from downstairs, in the kitchen. They went to the kitchen and found their daughter slumped back against the wall, crying and howling in terror, her foot wounded, pointing to a small bleak outline in the shadows. When they took a closer look, they saw a raccoon with huge green eyes nibbling something from his hands. When the animal saw them, it immediately ran away and found an escape in the swinging open cat door.
My brother was worried that Lorane would get rabies. The cut was deep and there was literally blood gushing out of her leg when they found her. Luckily, the wound was cleansed immediately. Lorane was safe, but their house wasn’t still, until they removed that perilous cat door.
When my brother called me to tell me what happened, I was deeply worried about my niece. I told him to remove the flap as soon as possible. He asked me if he had to get rid of Salamander. I said, “Silly, no. You need a petsafe cat flap.” He asked me what a petsafe cat flap is. I explained it to him over the phone. I also told him to check the Internet for it. I recommended him a magnetic cat flap. Most magnetic cat doors have a four-way locking system which only allows the cat with the electromagnetic collar to pass through. Other petsafe cat doors may still allow another cat to enter if she matches the requirements, for instance the color of the infrared for an infrared cat flap. But with an electromagnetic cat flap, the house owner is ensured that only his cat can access the door.
My brother ordered a magnetic cat door online. It was shipped to him three days after. They immediately replaced their ordinary cat flap and threw it in the trash. When Lorane and I met for our family reunion last week, I asked her how she was doing. Holding the cute cuddly sleeping Salamander in her arms, she replied with a smile, “Never been better.”
