The Infrared Cat Flap – How Does it Work?
My friend was having problem with her cat Mimi. Mimi, like my pet Cassie, is a little adventurous. She is always out of the house and she only returns home when the sun is already down and the dinner is already served. My friend thought that it was just normal for a cat to go outside every once in a while. But after a while she realized that Mimi’s expeditions became rather more frequent. She tried caging her cat, but after a day or two, Mimi suddenly refused to eat or to play with her, as if she was making a protest. She decided she could not do anything about it but allow her cat to go out and in whenever she wants to. She read about it and even consulted one of her relatives who is studying to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Everybody informed her that cats are generally natural wanderers. They always want to go outside and walk around the neighborhood. They all advised her to install a cat flap on her kitchen door to allow her cat to go out of the house every time she feels the need to do so. And so she installed a brand new flap on her door.
At first, everything went well. Until she noticed something odd. When Mimi returned to her house late at night, it’s either Mimi is with another cat or it’s not Mimi at all! This freaked her out. There were literally intruders in her house. These small animals – small dogs, raccoons, and other cats – entered through the flap. She was even worried that a thief might enter her home through the pet door.
Then for unknown reasons, we talked about it. One of our friends was celebrating her birthday and all of her friends were invited at the party. We chatted for a while and the conversation brought us to her cat. I told her my similar situation and she raised her concern about the perils of her flap. She really looked worried when I talked to her. I smiled at her and told her that there is still a solution: the petsafe cat flap. I told her about this cat door and introduced to her the safety that it offers based on my personal experience.
The next day, I accompanied her to the mall; we were to shop for a petsafe cat flap. We asked for assistance and the salesman brought us to the infrared cat flap. This cat flap is unique since it uses infrared technology. The infrared locking system is attached on the collar of your cat just like in case of the magnetic cat flap. Through this, only your cat can enter your house! No more intruders. No more worrying. The infrared cat door is ideal for my friend since she has only one cat. One flap is supplied with one infrared color. The salesman asked my friend though if there were other households in her neighborhood who also use infrared cat flaps. This is important to know because no similar infrared color should be supplied in one neighborhood since it may allow another cat to enter someone else’s house. As long as my friend is concerned, there are no other cat owners in her neighborhood except her and an old lady who lives 5 blocks away from her. If that is the case, the salesman said, then there is no problem.
We installed the flap on her kitchen door, replacing the old pet door. We trained Mimi to use the cat door and it was amazing how easily she familiarized herself with her new flap. I called her two weeks after and she responded with a jovial cry, telling me how life became easier and safer for her and her cat ever since she used an infrared cat door.
